A Shifting Perspective on Health

This session speaks to those involved in community development, who care about health, proximity accessibility and equitable transportation in their communities. This session will: 1) inform participants of the ways in which the streetscapes have been stripped from the hands of the American pedestrian and cyclist; 2) speak to the design choices that have allowed such development; 3) offer individual and policy-based solutions for developing safer streets for humans; and 4) aid in developing solutions for equitable cycling advocacy in our communities.

A Toolkit to Embed Equity Into Parks and Open Spaces

Learn more about how to use and access the High Line Network Community First toolkit; a new, user-developed digital resource for embedding equity into park organizations. People involved in infrastructure reuse projects have an imperative to address inequities caused by historic and persistent infrastructural racism by putting community first in design, budgeting and all phases of park planning. Looking for ways to embed equity into such projects, the Network partnered with Harvard Graduate School of Design, Urban Institute and 15 Network park organizations to explore the potential of public space to bring social, environmental and economic benefits to our cities during the past two years. The resulting High Line Network Community First toolkit offers steps to begin and continue measuring progress toward repairing economic and social harms that disproportionately impact communities of color.

A Win-Win for all People and all Wildlife

State park and wildlife agencies have similar conservation, recreation and education goals, and both need strong partnerships to accomplish these goals. We are in a wildlife crisis that is greatly being exacerbated by climate change. All levels of public and private entities need to work together to provide pollinator habitat; green infrastructure; and inclusive, safe open space for expanded and equitable recreation, education access and programs. Texas Parks and Wildlife serves as a model for hosting an urban biologist in all of their largest cities. As our natural world shrinks, urban and suburban areas need to supplement rural areas by offering the potential to restore wildlife habitat while reaching people where they live & these are the areas local and regional parks already are working in. We need to join forces to reach even more people, more effectively. We will use a toolkit to develop an action plan for creating this partnership & to help people and wildlife.

Battling Burnout

This speed session will address our roles as park and recreation professionals to battle burnout for our teams, which forces us to lead by example in battling our own burnout. Burnout is often mentioned in networking groups as a continued issue with park and recreation professionals. This speed session will provide insights on how you could be unintentionally contributing to others' burnout or even your own. Participants will be asked to be introspective and utilize the information provided to immediately begin their journey to eliminate or reduce factors causing burnout in their workplaces, as well as incorporate practices like stay interviews and not disturb settings while making sure they set the example as leaders.

Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation in Urban Parks

This session will inform attendees of cost-neutral tactics in landscape design and maintenance that park departments can deploy to make parkland more resilient and less resource dependent in an increasingly inhospitable climate. Explore how we are transitioning away from extractive landscape practices and are making design tweaks to retain more leaves, branches and logs in developed park landscape. Hear example of how organic matter can be staged to make maintenance more efficient and reduce irrigation and fertilization needs. Learn how we are reducing passive turf mowing from 31 times per year to once per year and overseeding these areas with mowable wildflowers to create pollinator habitat corridors. Explore design standard updates, plant selection emphasis on future climate tolerance, heat island mitigation, stormwater interception, and opportunities to address inequities in cooling shade throughout our system.
