Community Friendly Outdoor Sports Lighting

Join this session for a discussion of the Community Friendly Outdoor Sports Lighting Program that the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) has in place. A lighting project is evaluated as a whole and not based on the performance of a single fixture. The criteria for IDA approval will be reviewed and how they came to be. An approved project demonstrates best-in-class lighting that has minimal trespass and negative impacts on the night time environment for both animals and people.

Community-Based Stewardship

Caring for a riparian habitat takes a community. Waterways and, in particular, ephemeral washes have long suffered an image problem. In Peoria, Arizona, there are more than 500 people who volunteer their time and effort to manage and protect our waterways. They contribute enormous effort, passion and awareness-raising to restoring and improving waterway systems. Volunteers include residents, environmental education groups, the stormwater management team and students. Collectively the volunteers are coordinated by the city's parks and recreation team and promote environmentally smart initiatives such as Leave No Trace. This session discusses enabling conditions for creating a stewardship program and responding to the pressures facing our urban waterways. The session concludes with a summary of achievements in the face of declining environmental conditions, and presents a roadmap to meet the challenges waterways face in the future.

Designing and Managing Parks for Everyone

During this session, attendees will be introduced to a strategic approach for promoting, designing and managing accessible park environments. The Journey Experience Mapping Model for Accessibility (JEMMA) provides park administrators with simple guidelines for making their parks more inclusive that goes beyond just complying with standards. This model considers how people with disabilities experience parks including searching for potential activities in parks, planning their journeys, and arriving and engaging in park environments. By utilizing a participatory method that leverages spatial transcripts (maps with qualitative and quantitative data), park managers can work with people with disabilities to explore the challenges and solutions that can make their parks more accessible and inclusive throughout the park journey. As part of a panel discussion, the JEMMA model will be used to examine the accessibility challenges faced by visitors with disabilities and explore the potential solutions available to park managers.

Drone Right

The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) have become quite popular among parks departments, public safety offices, and other private and government agencies. However, this increase in popularity also has created a myriad of problems including accidents, inadequate resources, unknowingly violating Federal Aviation Administration or other rules and regulations, and/or making their department liable. Likewise, failure by many parks departments and municipalities to enact rules and regulations for UAV has made it difficult to enforce the use of drones by hobbyists and drone racers. This speed session will 'elevate' your knowledge of drone use by discussing best practices in conservation, mapping and trail inspection in parks. Participate to get a touch up on types of drones, certifications, regulations, privacy issues, and imaging and video software.
