Mining the Gems of COVID

COVID shut down the majority of senior programs and agencies throughout the country. Join as the speakers share their experiences in pushing through the pandemic for the older adult population in the Las Vegas valley. Agencies and professionals had to adapt, change and navigate new waters as they strove to continue to remain essential. As other organizations shut down, the park and recreation profession stepped up. Hear ideas that worked and what didn't in the speakers' organizations, and explore ideas that other agencies/professionals used to navigate COVID. This session will create gems that the participants can use to put in their basket of programming ideas.

Misunderstandings and Misgivings

Good communication is one of the most important survival skills for everyday business, whether working in municipal government, in the private sector or at an institution of higher learning. It's unfortunate, despite all our brainpower, that human beings are imperfect communicators. Flawed communication often generates conflict. Conflict isn't necessarily a bad thing; important ideas are often embedded in it. Good communication skills don't develop from avoiding conflicts, but they can help avoid unnecessary conflict and avoid exacerbating it. During this entertaining session, participants will learn how to catch miscommunications early, which can enable you to head off resentment, bruised egos and anger. It also can lead the way through bouts of conflict among colleagues and others. This session will address signs that allow you to determine if communication has gone awry and has produced unexpected emotional reactions, which does not include blank stares and lack of feedback.

More Than Words

In a division, any project, plan, program or directive is only as good as its follow through and maintenance. Success depends on staff at all levels within a division. Typically, communicated either verbally or by written words, there are more expectations to be understood than just those words, by both the author and the reader. Staff at all levels within a division should be engaged, included and respected when developing or implementing a directive, plan or project. Often some are skipped due to an assumption of knowledge. Vertical communication means engaging staff directly related to the directive or plan, who work at different levels within a division. During this session, attendees will learn to create a better directive, leading to a better-understood deed and achieving more successful outcomes through vertical communication and understanding. Attendees will explore a more collaborative construct to developing and accomplishing tasks by utilizing vertical communication skills.

Park and Recreation Brand Guidelines

Learn about how to develop brand guidelines for a park and recreation organization, using Willamalane Park and Recreation District's brand guideline development as a case study. This session will cover developing the framework, the rollout, guidelines in action and key lessons learned. Willamalane's Community Engagement team created brand guidelines to ensure consistency in marketing and communication within the team and across the organization. This brand guidelines project was more than a directory of color palettes and font choices. The guidelines created a documented description of the brand; a tool to help inform decisions for the district; a roadmap for using them appropriately; and a set of guidelines for design, communication, marketing and more.

Past the Skatepark and Beyond the Pump Track

Cities have spent billions of dollars on high-ticket, non-programmed, passive use, skate and bike facilities. During planning, the use of these facilities were misunderstood by those with good intentions but whose backgrounds were in traditional sports. Youth that participated in wheeled sports were not  interested in simply having a place to hang out, as a consequence, many skateparks and pump tracks have seen declining usage rates. Youth and parents are looking for traditional programming structure within the individual sports those facilities were designed for. Facilities that have been designed with the purpose of also providing recreational programming have seen increased participation rates. An entire population that was thought to have been served has not, and what they really want is their own version of Little League, but on wheels. We will discuss how to plan these multiuse facilities for both passive and programmed, revenue-generating use.
