Welcome 2 Golf

The most senior National Golf Foundation (NGF) staff member examines the details of new golfer development and retention programming that can help attendees understand which programs are succeeding in developing and retaining new customers (who want to learn how to golf) to the golf course. This is a key initiative to help improve struggling municipal golf courses, especially in light of 2020 and the COVID-19 impact. Review the potential impact that these new players can have on municipal golf course activity and economics, as well as other community outreach and enhanced participation impacts. Hear the presenters identify what new resources (staff, amenities and activities) are required to properly manage a successful player development initiative. Review effective advertising and promotion that can assist municipal golf courses in successfully attracting participants to take part in learning the game of golf.

Wholly Holistic Health

The traditional definition of fitness has evolved during the pandemic. While fitness centers previously focused on providing physical health, we must now pivot to provide mental and social well-being components. By exploring ways to incorporate neuroscience and other social/mental health programming into our fitness programs, we can provide truly holistic health. During this session, we'll focus on how one agency pivoted to bring a holistic approach to fitness and well-being, incorporating mental health initiatives into fitness offerings and services for those with substance use disorders. By doing so, we serve our public by providing programs and services not strictly laser-focused on just physical health, but also targeted at improving our guest's emotional, social and overall health and well-being.

Winning Language, Winning Action, Winning Culture

Have you ever wondered what "culture eats strategy for breakfast" really means? We'll break it down for you in this session. Every workplace has its own distinctive culture and everyone wants their culture to be positive and high performing. We will discuss the components that make up cultures, encourage participants to put their own culture under a microscope to truly assess each component, and identify where and how to start changing or improving departmental culture. We will provide examples of tools for surveying staff, discuss critical conversations that need to occur within leadership teams and staff, and highlight the importance of rewarding of what you want repeated in your culture. Participants will be asked to share their favorite examples of positive and not-so-positive cultures. The provided examples will be used to further explore the importance of language, actions to reinforce the ideal culture and how this effects the inclusivity of your culture.

Youngstown Lifeguard Academy: Growing Our Own

Three current Youngstown Lifeguard Academy members will accompany Founder and Chair Hon. Kevin A. Tarpley I to speak about health and wellness, equity and conservation. During this 6 minutes and 20 seconds, learn how the Youngstown (Ohio) Parks and Recreation Department has partnered with the academy to ensure that each year there are enough lifeguards to safely open the last remaining pool in the city of Youngstown, which this has been a problem for the last 30 years. Learn how the Director Dawn Turnage has allowed the department to become a training center for academy members through community service to and for the park system. For example, the academy co-led the Community Learn Swim under the leadership of First Lieutenant Aaron Medina. He served as the assistant pool manager/head lifeguard and increased the level of professionalism by conducting weekly in-service. Medina is now Ohio Parks and Recreation Association's Youth Leader of the Year.
