The Gift of Play: Giving New Life to Old Playgrounds

The story of Kids Around the World (KATW) and its faith-based mission is inspiring. Since 1994, KATW volunteers have installed approximately 1,000 playgrounds at parks, schools and orphanages in about 80 different countries. Most of the equipment for these playgrounds comes from park and recreation agencies in the United States that have donated their old playgrounds to make way for replacement equipment. KATW's work promotes social equity, conservation, and health and wellness by ensuring access to the benefits of recreation to children in impoverished communities. Recycling playground equipment also promotes the three "R's" of sustainability and conserves space in landfills. This session will discuss and explore the history of KATW, the development of partnerships with governmental and private sectors, the mutual benefits derived from the partnerships, and how your agency can be involved in this effort.

This Building Breathes

Washington, D.C., is leading the way as a member of the 100 Resilient Cities Network. The D.C. Department of General Services (DGS) is building the civic infrastructure of the future, particularly through the D.C. Department of Parks + Recreation (DPR). Recreation centers are especially relevant project types providing amenities and resources equally to each demographic group. New DPR projects fulfill the agency's and the city's mission to promote wellness, conserve the environment and provide universal access. Rick Schneider will discuss the part sustainable facilities play in equitable design, community building and green infrastructure. Case studies include the first recreation center with integrated natural ventilation, designed on biophilic principles as a resilient hub in the face of floods and power outages. He will discuss how to utilize design, sustainability and key partnerships to build a more resilient future.

Tree of Life

The City Harrisonburg, Virginia's Urban Wood Program was established in 2018 with the arrival of Emerald Ash Borer beetle, which can damage ash trees. The program adapted to the challenge of managing a forest with 14 percent ash trees and created an opportunity to reutilize the trees, while creating a circular economy in the community. City staff removed more than 1,200 ash during the past three years. This program has a goal to utilize all parts of a fallen tree, keeping it out of the landfill. Smaller limbs are utilized as mulch, larger limbs are processed into firewood, and logs are upcycled to lumber that the agency, as well as other local businesses can utilize. The program creates jobs for the agency staff and other community members who utilize wood products, while generating revenue for the agency. Participants will learn what an urban wood program is, how to establish a program and what roadblocks to expect.
