Trauma Informed Care in Action

According to the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, Trauma Informed Care (TIC) is an approach in which all parties involved recognize and respond to the impact of traumatic stress on those who have contact with the system - including children, caregivers, and service providers. Programs and agencies within such a system infuse and sustain trauma awareness, knowledge, and skills into their organizational cultures, practices, and policies. They act in collaboration with all those who are involved with the child, using the best available science, to maximize physical and psychological safety, facilitate the recovery of the child and family, and support their ability to thrive. TIC follows these guiding principles: safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, empowerment and equity. Early identification of trauma resulting from Adverse Childhood Experiences is critically important. School?age afterschool programs, equipped with the knowledge of how to be trauma informed and trauma responsive can play a vital role in not only identifying a need for trauma related intervention, but provide engaging experiences that build positive skills and social and emotional learning for youth.

Using CAPRA Accreditation: Build Your Leadership Pipeline

Like many park and recreation organizations, Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District (THPRD) faced dramatic changes to its workforce, both during and prior to the pandemic disruption in 2020. Longtime staff members departing via retirement, layoffs or by seeking promotional opportunities elsewhere resulted in a loss of institutional memory - a major roadblock in bringing forward the next leaders in parks and recreation. When THPRD first started to see the impact of these losses, its leaders believed that seeking accreditation through the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) would present an ideal opportunity to document and formalize processes and serve as a succession planning tool. Both in the agency's initial accreditation, and its first reaccreditation - which occurred post-pandemic - THPRD saw a true value in evaluating processes, prioritizing critical long-range planning and measuring successes. Through their CAPRA journey, THPRD was able to engage emerging leaders by pairing them with tenured managers to share information and formalize processes, thereby providing critically needed workforce and leadership development opportunities. This session will provide tips, tricks and advice on using CAPRA as your leadership development pipeline.

Whose Park Is It Anyway?

Parks and recreation should provide our communities with equitable access to all resources. However, we often see disparities in activities and programs participated in by people of color. In this session, we examine the history and barriers of outdoor recreation participation in African Americans and discuss ways "recreating" is different for all members of our communities. We will discuss ways we can provide equitable access to all resources, how we are managing relationships with community stakeholders, opportunities to make all feel welcome and rethinking how we are engaging online and offline. Additionally, the session will address user conflict by providing insights and guidance on navigating disagreements between outspoken stakeholders and participants, creating space for those traditionally underserved, building strong relationships within the community, and ensuring that the benefits of parks and recreation are accessible to everyone. Attendees will be asked to share stories and strategies that are helping them foster a strong collaborative culture during this time.

This talk is an NRPA Member Benefit.

Your Words and Actions: Is Recreation Really Your Profession

This session will be a quick-hitting "self-assessment" for recreation professionals individually and from a leadership perspective. The old adage "you never get a second chance to make a first impression" is absolutely true. Current and potential participants, staff, funders and partners hear us long before we say a word. Often we have created obstacles that are almost impossible to overcome because we don't even know they exist. More importantly, good will can be created the same way. There are so many aspects to this that we can't cover them all. But there are a top three that we will address: communication (verbal and non), attitude (staff and participant) and appearance (staff and facility).
